Crashes caused by lag Empty
PostSubject: Crashes caused by lag   Crashes caused by lag EmptySun 2 Jan - 22:07

On a couple of occassions now, I've been involved in crashes caused by lag on my end. I see the cars around me start sliding around the track, eventually snapping back onto their usual line, and due to this unpredictable behavior, I don't know where to go. So end up in a position which causes a crash, much to my own frustration as much as anyone I take down with me.

Is there anything I can do to keep this sort of thing to a minimum? I can't get a faster Internet connection, due to the area I live in, so that's out of the question.

A quick ping to the server ranges from 700 to 900 ms... :(

if your ping is like that on all servers then there is not a lot you can do.

65ms, so your connection to the data center is fine, ping some other servers.

No, that's other speedtest servers. Would you prefer I tried other rFactor servers?

Just had a look in the server list. The ping for every server (other than the 0s) seemed about right.

It's the 'Last Man Standing' server you played on last night, running nothing but Virtua_LM tracks. The one run by Kleini. How was it for you?

it was fine for me last night, but if your getting 900 ping on it tonight and ping is fine on other servers then his server could be having connection issues.

Crashes caused by lag Empty
PostSubject: Re: Crashes caused by lag   Crashes caused by lag EmptyMon 3 Jan - 12:04

What could we do for better pings?

Our dedicated server is running on:
Upstream Rated KBPS="8000" // Rated uploading speed of connection, in kilobits per second
Downstream Rated KBPS="8000" // Rated downloading speed of connection, in kilobits per second
Dedicated Target Rate="1000" // Target sampling rate for dedicated server (higher #s reduce latency slightly but increase CPU usage)
Max Data Per Client="9999" // if desired, a per-client upload limit (in kbps) will be used if lower than the computed throttle rate

I would be happy if you could give some tips when our settings are bad!

I am not sure if all is really perfect?!

Crashes caused by lag Empty
PostSubject: Re: Crashes caused by lag   Crashes caused by lag EmptySat 8 Jan - 19:06

Sorry to bump this thread, but I thought I'd add some more information.

I've had Steam running in the background, and when playing in window mode, I can see Steam lose connection to their servers at the same time as I start having problems.

I then tried "ping 192.168.1.1 -t -l 1", and left that running where I could see it while I was racing. A constant connection test to my router, which was frequently dropping out. More than half the pings timed out.

The electrical system in my house has become part of my network, using adapters much like these. I thought this seemed dodgy the instant we started using them, and I was right. There's something interferring with the connection, which isn't beyond the realms of possibility. There's loads of things connected to it.

Who'd have guessed it, a house's electrical equipment being terrible at something it was never meant to do in the first place.

I am now going to replace these with a wire running through my house. That should make things better until the cats chew it to pieces.

The connection's better when not playing rFactor, but once playing rFactor, my entire network connection just seems to drop dead.
